DLP Model For Home Projector Choice

Why you should choose a DLP Model

You've made the decision that your home projector should be capable of handling HD imagery, and you know that 720P or 1080P is the output to be classed as HD. So what makes a DLP projector a good choice?

If you are dealing with limited space, a big advantage can be the fact that DLP projectors are lighter in weight and physically smaller than their LCD counterparts. Due to their plug-and-play functionality, they are user friendly and you can have your setup done in a matter of minutes.

Let's talk tech

Visible pixel structure (often referred to as the screendoor effect because the projected images looked like they were being viewd through a screen door) is a trait that LCD projectors were often known for possessing. DLP models are well known for their reduced pixelation. Due to there being more surface area per mirror, and less space between adjacent mirrors., DLP projected images are crystal clear and razor sharp because the DLP chip minimizes the gaps between pixels in an image. Spaced less than one micron apart, these mirrors create a film like image that is so smooth it will literally immerse you.

Of great importance is contrast, because of the depth in the imagery it produces. The higher the contrast, the deeper the color saturation and the blacker the blacks you will see on your screen. DLP projectors are especially good at preventing wayward light from reaching the screen and reducing contrast. As a result, DLP projectors tend to have better contrast ratios than LCD models. Contrast ratios are also much higher in DLP projectors and are better at creating a "blacker" black.

Higher available lumen levels is another benefit. A low lumen count will mean that you will have to use your projector in a very dark room.

The higher level of technology in DLPs does make them more expensive, but that is offset by the knowledge that with zero hassle and (minimal) maintenance, you can enjoy your viewing experience and not worry about your projector.

For your consideration

When it comes to your projector choice for home theater, steady advances in color, contrast, and image stability that have served to make DLP a technology preferred by many for home theater use.

Compare Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 and DMC-ZS3 - Which Compact Digital Camera Meets Your Needs

Panasonic created a winner in the point and shoot "zoom" category with the Lumix DMC-TZ5. Just about one year later, they have given us the Lumix DMC-ZS1 and the DMC-ZS3. (In the European market they are known as the TZ6 and TZ7 respectively. Am I alone in thinking that continuing the "TZ" brand would make more logical sense? And why is there no ZS2?)

This article will compare the Lumix ZS1 and ZS3.

Beginning with the basic specifications that are identical in both cameras:

  • 10.1 Megapixels

  • 12x Zoom Range (25-300mm)

  • Optical Image Stabilization

  • 80-6400 ISO Range

  • 27 Scene Modes with Intelligent Auto

  • Image Quality rated highest among Digital Compacts with similar features (DPReview.com)
The features that are different (ZS1 vs ZS3):

  • LCD - 2.7" (230k resolution) vs 3.0" (460k)

  • Image Sensor - 1/2.5" vs 1/2.33"

  • Video - 848x480 30fps video w/mono sound vs 720p 60fps video w/stereo sound
These 3 features add just over $100 to the price tag for the ZS3. Yet, in spite of the extra $$$, the Lumix ZS3 is outselling its ZS1 cousin by a large margin. Why??

The reason is that most digital compact camera users are now quite comfortable with using their "point and shoot" camera for their basic video needs. And the difference in this feature is significant when you consider many folks are now viewing on big screen HD televisions.

The other big difference is the LCD screen. While 0.3" does not seem that big of a deal, when added to double the pixel resolution (230,000 vs 460,000), the view quality of the live view and playback is significant.

With respect to image quality and printing images, in a comparison test against other super zoom cameras, the ZS1 and ZS3 were dual winners at DPReview.com.

The final word comes from those who have actually purchased the camera for personal use. After all, the consumer has the last word in satisfaction.

Checking the user reviews at DPReview.com and Amazon.com, both cameras rated highly - at least 4.16 out of 5. In fact, at Amazon, the Lumix ZS1 rated at an impressive 4.67 (out of 5).

As you make your digital camera buying decision, keep the Panasonic Lumix ZS1 and ZS3 in mind. And do not forget about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5, which has the same features as the more expensive ZS3 with respect to video and image quality (there have been some upgrades to the way video is recorded in the ZS3 that take up less storage space and give the user an option as to the recording mode, but the TZ5 video is comparable to its newer sibling). Picking up the TZ5 would produce a savings of more than $150.

LG 42LC7D 42-inch 720p LCD HDTV

LG 42LC7D 42-inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

We originally bought a Philips TV at Best Buy, but after we got home and opened it up, found it didn't have the analog connection we needed to hook up the very fine stereo system we had(after the salesman and Best Buy told us it did). Best Buy took it right back and offered us this set in exchange even though it was priced slightly higher. Very easy to install and it had all the connections we needed. However, at first I wasn't too happy with the picture. It seemed a little dark and a bit muddy but after researching on the internet and reading the manual a little more, I found that it can be adjusted and now the picture quality on most stations is great! I have to note that we don't subscribe to cable or satellite or any other programs, just get our local on air channels. We do watch a lot of DVDs and there's no problem with them. The main problem we have now has to do with the station signals which, if not good that day, cause pixels to break up and freeze at times. At first I thought it was the TV and went back to Best Buy where another salesperson showed me how to adjust the antenna and check the signal, so we get the best signal possible now. Overall I would rate this TV pretty well. Have had it about 3 weeks now so we'll see how it stands the test of time. Although, I wonder if we should have sprung for a more expensive TV and one with 1080p, this one so far does what we need and looks great.

Toshiba REGZA 42HL67 42-Inch 720p LCD HDTV

Toshiba REGZA 42HL67 42-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

Products by : Toshiba

Model : 42HL67

Rating Reviews : 4.5

Availability : N/A

This is my third Toshiba TV, sold one to make room for this one and still have a 50" Rear Projection that has NEVER given me any trouble eight years running(Knock on wood). For the money -- 42" for ,019 including S&H from another web site, this is hands down ... THE LCD to get. If your looking for LCD's that is. Good picture quality with standard definition programming despite the poor standard def. signal we get from our cable company. I have seen reviewers complain about this TV's standard definition picture, but you must realize the old addage ... junk in = junk out. No TV can "clear up" a poor signal. Remember also that these TV's are meant to be viewed from a distance, be sure to buy size appropriate for the room as too big means a grainy looking picture. Unbelievable, but in the case of High Def. TV's ... bigger isn't always better a.k.a. size DOES matter!! This sets High Definition picture is incredible ... looks 3D. Don't worry about it being only 720P as cable providers (at least mine) are only feeding 1080i anyways and it fills this screen size nicely with excellent detail. You can count the blades of grass during PGA tournaments or watch the dust flying around each contestant during their post-performance review on American Idol(Somebody needs to dust out there in California!). If you want a High Def. set above 42" in size, you'll want 1080p capability to reduce possible pixelization. I don't have Blue-Ray or the defunct HD-DVD to review but my 480p Progressive DVD player picture is very clean on this TV. If you buy a High Def. TV you ABSOLUTEY need a "High Def. Set-up Disc" such as AVIA, etc. Borrow one from a friend, maybe Netflix rents 'em, or straight up buy one with the coin you saved buying this tv. These DVD's help tune in the picture as most TV's are sent out of the factory with extreme color saturation and brightness (an attempt to stand out from the crowd in the showroom). And you ABSOLUTELY have to somehow get High Def. content running through this TV such as "Over-the-air" rabbit ears, HD cable box, HD satellite box, Blue-Ray player, or the now-defunct HD-DVD player. Not doing so should be listed as one of the seven deadly sins... Failure to provide a high tech., high def., flat screen LCD TV an appropriate signal!!!! PS- Always connect equipment with the highest level connector available to you. Ex- If your cable provider box has an HDMI output ... use it. You'll get the best picture that way. And don't be fooled by "Monster Cables" for HDMI cables (or any other cables for that matter). Unless you have a "Theatre Rooom" and spell and call it such ... you're an average joe or jane like me. That means go to a web reseller (mycablemart, ect.) and buy an HDMI cable for $ instead of $$$$$. A digital signal is either there or it's not, no such thing as "signal degradation" like an analog connection.

As for "problems" other reviewers are having here ... 1)Yes, they're right, these speakers can't handle a lot of bass. My old analog TV couldn't either. They're simply not made for a wide range of acoustic, Not too many TV speakers are.
2) Delay in start up ... read the manual people! States that is a power saving energy star feature that CAN be set off for instant power up.
3)Sluggish remote ... I do have to agree with this one a little, not extreme though. And when sun is glaring toward it (Infrared Radiation) it does have a less of a remote "field of vision". Ehhh, I draw the blinds then and it just makes the picture look that much better ;-)

Toshiba REGZA 42HL67 42-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Feature

  • 720p Display Resolution (1366x768)
  • ATSC/NTSC/QAM Tuner
  • DynaLight Dynamic Back Light Control

Toshiba REGZA 42HL67 42-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Overview

As your source for digital home entertainment, Toshiba offers one of the most extensive television lineups in the industry. Whether you're looking for the latest in HDTV, the flattest FST Pure flat-screen TVs, or the highest quality in portable televisions, Toshiba has what you want.PRODUCT FEATURES:PixelPure 3G 14-bit digital video processing;DynaLight dynamic back light control;CineSpeed;ATSC/NTSC & QAM digital television tuners;SoundStrip speaker system;StableSound;Dolby digital dynamic range control.

Toshiba REGZA 42HL67 42-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Specifications

Toshiba's Regza line of TVs marry state-of-the-art technology to hip design. One feature that sets them apart is PixelPure 14-bit digital video processing, which creates more than 4,000 levels of color gradations for a smooth, natural-looking picture without posterization or image banding. Another benefit is a fast response time. Response time is the interval an LCD screen takes to from its darkest color to its lightest color and back again, measured in milliseconds (ms). This screen's response time is 8 ms, which is at the faster and better end of the spectrum. This screen is likely to display cleaner, sharper images during high-action scenes and with fewer image artifacts than other screens in its class. This technology is housed in a black gloss cabinetry that is sure to fit well with most any decor.

The 42HL67 has a panel resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. This qualifies it as 720 progressive-line HDTV, which is a noticeably better picture than standard definition sets, but not as detailed as the 1080 HD sets available. Its 16:9 wide screen aspect ratio delivers most movies the way they were meant to be seen in the theater, without back bars wasting the top and bottom of the screen.

The Value of LCD TVs
Aside from their obvious aesthetic value, LCD TVs are much more practical in the home than CRT (tube-style) televisions. They take up a smaller footprint, and thus use up less floor space in the room. Also, LCD TVs are lighter and easier to move around when cleaning or redecorating. The 42HL67 is only 4.89 inches deep and weighs 54 pounds. Best of all, LCD screens use less power than CRTs and plasma screens.

Connections
The set has a built-in digital television tuner, so out of the box it can receive digital broadcast ATSC signals and QAM signals used by most digital cable providers. It also has a built-in 181-channel NTSC tuner, so it can also accept traditional analog signals. It can also make these connections to your audio and video components:

  • HDMI inputs: 3
  • ColorStream HD component video inputs: 2
  • PC monitor input: 1 VGA 15 Pin D-sub
  • S-video input: 1
  • A/V inputs: 2

Audio
The unit's SoundStrip speaker system hides the unit's speakers in a thin strip bordering the screen. They're powerful enough to deliver big stereo sound, but they don't add significantly to the size of the set. Toshiba's StableSound feature maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal. This is an extremely useful feature when transitioning between a quiet television program and a very loud commercial advertisement or when changing channels. SRS WOW, a combination of SRS 3D, TruBass, and Focus sound-expanding systems, create a 3-D sound field with improved bass response over standard TV audio and create directed, three-dimensional audio sweet spot for maximum enjoyment. The TV also has optical digital output for connecting to your audio system.

42-inch wide screen
A general rule of thumb for selecting the right size television screen is that the screen width--not its 42-inch diagonal measurement--should be between three and five times the optimum viewing distance, such as the distance from the TV screen to where your eyes are while sitting on the couch. Less than that and you may be distracted by the scan lines of the picture. More than that, and you may lose the detail of your TV. Based on this guide, the 42HL67 is ideal for viewing distances of 9.5 to 16 feet.

What's in the Box
42HL67, stand, 4-item universal remote, stand, warranty and product manuals.

This is a review of the 42" Panasonic Viera TC-P42X1 Plasma TV. It's an awesome 720p display and has ZERO visual lag. The display's built-in speakers have audio lad, but connecting A/V equipment to external speakers eliminates this problem. So this display is perfect for music games such as beatmaniaIIDX, DanceDanceRevolution, etc. I play two IIDX songs to demonstrate. The timing has not been adjusted at all in the game. Yes, my voice is deep, but it's not THAT deep. Cheap camera microphones ...

Selecting a Flatscreen TV

Plasma TVs and LCD TVs (flat screen TVs) may look similar, but there are differences in features and technology that can be the deciding factor when you come to choose your new TV. Flatscreen TVs are luxury items and a are a major purchase for most of us, so it helps to be well informed.

Screen Size vs Room Size

Flat screen TVs come in different sizes, so how big should you go? It's tempting just to buy the biggest one you can afford, but this may not be the wisest option. Room size and furniture layout should determine the optimal TV screen size, not your personal taste. Most people would think that the bigger the room, the bigger the TV. The key to finding out the best size of TV for your room is to measure the distance between where the TV will be positioned and where your seating is. Obviously, a 19" screen will seem tiny in a large room, but if your chairs are within four or five feet of the TV, you will still have a good viewing experience. Also, larger TVs have wider viewing areas. Flat screen TVs are best viewed head on, as the picture washes out when viewed at an angle. So if you have some seating at an angle to the TV, a larger screen is the better choice. Before you buy, jot down measurements of viewing distance and room size. A good showroom salesperson will be able to recommend the right screen size for you.

Plasma or LCD

There are two types of flat screen TV: plasma and LCD. Both produce very high quality pictures, and both have pros and cons, so it helps to be informed about what each has to offer. Plasmas are the kings of size. The smallest plasma TV is 42", which may be too big for some rooms, and (at the time of writing) go up to an incredible 150", although this is not a commercial model. The screen contains phosphors which produce light. This gives a very bright picture that has a film-like quality, rich, natural colours, and very clear action sequences. Plasma TVs are also prone to "burn in". If an image is static on the screen for too long, it will burn into the screen forever. However, new technologies exist to decrease and prevent this. Plasma screens are more reflective than their LCD counterparts and reflect room lights, so if you opt for a plasma TV, consider rearranging your lighting. If you watch a lot of movies, then a plasma will give a better quality picture, even from wider viewing angles.

Although they are brighter, LCD TVs do not have the same picture clarity as plasmas, but they are catching up. They are thinner, lighter (better for wall mounting) and more energy efficient than plasma TVs, and are also quieter, as they don't require a fan for cooling. If your room can't accommodate a large screen TV, then LCD is the best option, as they come in sizes starting at 19". LCD TVs aren't affected by air pressure which means the picture will stay true at higher altitudes. The "burn in" that affects plasma TVs isn't an issue with LCDs. This means they are better suited to playing video games or TV programmes which have scrolling tickers. A downside is that sometimes during fast action scenes, the picture can pixellate, although manufacturers are addressing this.

Confusing Terms Explained

It's easy to get confused when choosing a flat screen TV because of the terminology used to describe their features. Although individual manufacturers have coined terms for their own features and innovations, there are many industry standard terms. Here's a glossary of some of the main terms you'll come across.

HDTV - High Definition Television. This offers twice the resolution or clarity of a normal display. The image is crystal clear and has surround sound in compact disc quality.

Aspect Ratio - The shape of the screen. TV programmes and DVDs are available in different sizes. Widescreen TVs will display older programmes in 4:3 (the traditional TV screen shape) and black bars appear at the side (letterboxed). Movies are shot in 16:9 and fit better into wide screens. Today's flat screen TVs are able to display pictures in a variety of aspect ratios.

Resolution - The measurement of picture quality. Also called Progressive Scan. It is measured in pixels: the more pixels, the higher the quality. Terms like "720p" or "1080p"  refer to the horizontal amount of pixels. The "p" stands for Progressive Scan.

Refresh Rate - The number of frames played per second. Referred to in hertz e.g. 60Hz or  120Hz. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother moving pictures appear.

Response Time - The time it takes for pixels to switch between black and white. Measured in milliseconds e.g. 6ms, 8ms, the lower the response time the smoother the picture.

HDMI - High-Definition Multimedia Interface. Ports for connecting multimedia devices such as DVD and Blu-Ray players, computers, games consoles and set top boxes.

Summary

Bigger isn't always better. Measure your room, find the best location for your TV, and ask a showroom salesperson for advice on size and type of screen best suited to your needs, and buy the best TV you can for your budget.

1080i and 1080p

I know how confusing it can be when walking into an electronics section, walking over to the televisions, and being bombarded with numbers, phrases, and "specs." TVs with 1080i resolution use to dominate the HD world, offering the best picture at the time. However, in the past couple of years the new bully on the block -- 1080p -- has made it difficult for the 1080i's to survive. In fact, you will rarely find a new 1080i television -- you will find either 720p or 1080p. This is basically due to the fact that 720p visually looks the same as 1080i in most cases (until you get into the 42″+range). Also, if a person wants to spend more money on a better picture, they will most likely be shopping for a large TV, and will most likely be willing to spend more to get the best. This leaves only a small piece of the pie willing to buy a 1080i resolution set, and manufacturers know this. Keeping this in mind, we'll take a look at both:

1080i:

The "i" stands for interlaced, which means that of the 1,080 lines of resolution, the even lines appear, then the odd lines, then the even lines, etc. This all happens extremely fast, around 0.033 seconds. Although it is fast, it is not as fast as a 1080p display, which shows all of the lines at the same time. The 1080 part comes from the number of horizontal lines in the display, 1920 x 1080. 1080i and 720p are considered standard HD definition.

1080p:

This technology has the same amount of pixels as 1080i, 1920 x 1080. However, the "p" means the display is progressive, meaning all of the lines are produced at the same time, taking about 0.016 seconds to display the image (twice as fast as interlaced) . 1080p can supposedly display over 2,000,000 pixels, double the resolution of a 720p display. 1080p is commonly referred to as "ultra HD," "full HD," or "true HD." This is the latest and greatest technology, and dominates the high-end TV market.

1080p obviously offers a better picture, but also comes with a much higher price. Also, 1080p technology really only applies to Blu Ray DVDs and Blu Ray video games -- everything else (cable TV, regular DVDs, etc) is displayed in regular HD (720p or 1080i). In the future there will definitely be more use for a 1080p set, but that will be years from now. 720p resolution offers a better picture than 1080i when it comes to viewing action movies, sports, video games, etc. This is true up until about 52″ and above, because at that point the image suffers, in which case a 1080i set would be preferred. Lets break down that information one last time:

Quick Summary:

1080p > 1080i if using Blu Ray technology

1080i > 1080p displaying everything else

720p > 1080i on screens under 52″

1080i > 720p in screens over 52″

Plasma Screen Televisions - Are They Dead?

Why is everyone asking if plasma televisions are dead? The plasma screen television is one of the marvel inventions of this decade, yet more and more people are turning away from them as fast as we adopted them. LCD is the current favorite for the majority of consumers, no doubt due to its lower price. LCD screens are also known for performing better in brightly lit rooms, which is a major reason why they look better on store floors and thus, sell better than plasma in most cases.

So should you consider buying a plasma TV or should you stick with LCD?

Recently two big names in the plasma manufacturing world dropped out of the market: Pioneer and Vizio have both announced that they are no longer making Plasma Televisions, instead choosing to focus on more successful product lines like LCD TV's. This represents both the high and low end of the plasma market which indicates that both ends are feeling the pinch.

In addition to that, the CEO of LG has also hinted that they might be stopping plasma production some time in the near future although this is yet to be confirmed and they are continuing to release plasma TV's in 2009.

So the market is now left wide open for Samsung, LG and Panasonic and they are expected to see solid plasma sales in 2009. There is no reason why you should not buy a TV from these brands - provided you can afford the increased price compared with LCD.

You can now buy entry level plasma TV's for as little as $800, such as the Panasonic TC-X1 720p 42". This will be a good quality TV if Panasonic's PX80 series is anything to go by. Of course, you could get a full HD 1080p LCD screen for a similar price - but will you really notice the difference in picture quality from 720p to 1080p? Most people don't.

Plasma screen television technology is far from dead. LCD is just catching up and I can see both having a very equal market share in time to come as Plasma costs come down and LCD technology improves even more. A Plasma TV will generally outperform an LCD in a side to side comparison so your decision is going to 100% depend upon your budget more than any other factor.
