Technically, LCD and Plasma TVs take different approaches to similar result. Although they create images using completely different technologies, both types of TVs are thin enough to be placed virtually anywhere, and produce a picture that is startlingly clear, sharp, and bright. COLOR ACCURACY

Plasma color accuracy will prevail in rooms with low to normal lighting, while LCDs will be better in brighter rooms due to their inherent anti-glare technology.

I'd buy one of these again, and would recommend it to a friend. It's about as simple to install as it could possibly be. Very solid quality of all the parts, including the screws and bolts. Very good instructions, and everything needed was included. It was as straight-forward and easy to install as mounting a TV on your wall could possibly be. The two vertical arms bolt onto the back of the TV. Evidently there is a standard for placing bolt holes on the back of flat panel TVs so one can attach a mount. Bolts of every common size are included. Then you screw the mounting bracket onto the wall, making sure that the screws go into studs. You should have a stud-finder for this; they are inexpensive. Good sized, quality, hex-head lag screws are included for the wall mounting, as well as concrete anchors, in case you have a concrete wall. After the arms are on the TV and the bracket is on the wall, you lift up the TV and hook it on, like hanging a picture on the wall. Once the TV is hanging, you tighten the two lock screws so it can't be lifted off again unless you loosen them. There were no frustrations, no "gotcha's", no cursing the company that made it. One nice surprise was that there is a built-in bubble level on the mounting bracket. That's a thoughtful extra that shows the manufacturer has a "what else can we do to make this better" attitude.

Buying a High Definition Television

If you have a cash tree in your back garden choosing a HD TV is easy pick the biggest and most expensive and your bound to be on to a winner right. Well I don’t know about you, but my money tree got lost in the post. Plasmas have a wider viewing angle then LCD. Older LCD screens tended to blur fast moving images newer LCD do not suffer so much with this problem. LCD screens traditionally lasted longer then there plasma counterparts but this seems to be getting better, a plasma screen in the past would have lost half its brightness after 20,000 hours or more of use. If you use the TV for 24 hours a day, we are talking a lifespan of 2.2 years, modern plasmas screens can last up to 60,000 hours. LCD screens are guaranteed to last more then 60,000 hours or 6.6 years (24 hours a day use)

Size

Is bigger better, well if you are a man like me, yes. I wanted the 60 inch screen to go into my minimal sized living space but my wife soon gave me a reality check. In hindsight, I can see she was right. If you have a limited space, a large screen can totally dominate a living area. if I had that bachelor pad I so often dream about I don’t see it as a problem. if you have family get a screen to complement the size of the room not dominate it a screen size of 38- 42 inches is adequate for most sized rooms if you have a larger room then look at the 50 inch + models.

Screen resolution

Screen resolution is defined by the number of pixels, the more pixels the better the picture

You normal non HD Television = 480 lines this is normal terrestrial television
480p = 852 x 480 giving you 408960 pixels

720p =1,280x720 giving you 921600 pixels

1080i = 1,920x1,080 giving you 2073600 pixels

1080p =1,920x1,080 giving you 2073600 pixels with progressive scan

What Manufacturer

Now that’s a loaded question that I would be hesitant to answer. I have my favourites because of there reputation for quality which include the likes of Sony and Toshiba. Even the top end manufactures can produce a bum model now and again, as a budget manufactures can produce a technological masterpiece. What I would do is, once I've found a model that I like the look of, get all the details, including model number and do a search via Google for something like "Sony -model number here- review". I would then be in a position to make an informed decision about purchasing that particular model. When spending large amounts of cash you should research your product because when you make that purchase you will know that you got the best product for you. More importantly you will not suffer from buyers regret after the purchase.

Questions to ask when buying

Screen size

Get a screen to fit with the size of your room I would go for a 42 inch for most people unless you have an extremely small living space

Resolution

I would choose a model with the best definition so we are talking a 1080i or 1080p model to get the best from Blu Ray or HD DVD go for 1080p

Connections

How many devices can you connect to it? You must have room for a HDMI connection and a PC connection plus several AV connections more is better

Tuner

Make sure you have a built in digital tuner a few models still only come with an analogue tuner.

Making the purchase

Do not be afraid to haggle even in the big chains; sometimes this can pay off. If they will not comedown on price get them to print the details of the model and go to another store and find the model you want and show them the print out and ask them to beat that price. Get them to give you there best price and if the company have a web site before you make the purchase check the web price it is often cheaper on the web site then in the store. Return to the shop and ask them to at least match the web price, again take a printout of the companies online store price. Some stores will match without much hassle others will give you the web price but only if you take the difference between store and web price in vouchers to be used in that chain only. Others will just say no . it’s a buyers market and as consumers we have the power not to spend money with companies who take a non flexible attitude with the customer.

We purchased eight of these for our company to use as large informational displays. They seem to work alright, and have all the inputs that we need. In our case it's actually a benefit that they don't come with tuners, that way we're not paying for something we're probably not allowed to use here. Seems to do a good job of up-sampling, but not all resolutions (especially those larger than 1366x768) seem to be able to be displayed.
Only reason it's not five stars is that it would be nice if the unit would turn on automatically when it receives VGA input.

I got this TV during the Black Friday sale and I must say, I am overwhelmingly impressed with what Samsung has to offer. Free shipping by Amazon via Pilot was icing on the cake and the shipping was quick and efficient (they even delivered it all the way to my living room of my condo apartment!).

Size:
As a first time HDTV owner, I wanted to buy a HDTV that is larger than my current one (Sony WEGA 22") but smaller than a 46 inch. After testing out several units at Best Buy and Walmart stores, my final TV size was 42" - not too large, but not too small. It was just the right size for an HDTV. It was also the right size for a 720p resolution, as I soon found out firsthand.

Resolution (720p vs. 1080p):
After going through many reviews from several electronic websites, I have come to the conclusion that at 42 inch, the human eye cannot really tell the difference between 720p and 1080p unless you sit within 1 foot away from the TV. 720p simply means a resolution of 1024x768 pixels, whereas 1080p has 1920x1080 pixels. The 'p' stands for progressive scan, which means all pixel rows are lit each time, displaying smoother moving images. Nowadays, cable companies offer HD channels that only broadcast at 720p, so there's really no need to spend the extra money on a 1080p TV.

Plasma vs. LCD (Contrast and Brightness):
The popular demand nowadays is LCD since prices have gone down, but nevertheless the argument still rages on as to which type of display dominates. From what I saw, plasma TVs have a really quick response time (.001ms) as opposed to LCDs, have richer colors, deep blacks and great contrast for movies and sports viewing, whereas LCDs are brighter, but are relatively weaker in terms of displaying a rich, warm color.

This Samsung plasma looks absolutely gorgeous when viewed with an HDMI cable. The images are very rich in contrast, especially with the 2,000,000 to 1 mega contrast ratio. PS3 graphics are also rich in color when used with a HDMI cable.

Anti-burn in Technology:
While it is true that plasmas do suffer from burn-ins, keep in mind that LCDs have their woes as well - suffering from dead pixels. Samsung has did a great job from previous plasma models of reducing burn-ins with 2 features that include pixel shift and pixel scrolling, which moves the pixels at a designated interval (recommended for this TV is 2 horizontal, 2 vertical, every 2 min).

Value:
At 0, this is a really good price for a quality Samsung plasma. If you need more HDMi ports and connections, capability to use Anynet technology for universal remotes, and a headphone jack, you can get all that with a Samsung PN42B450 model for more (currently 4 at Amazon as of this review).

Differences between PN42B400 and PN42B450:
The only difference I've noticed with my Samsung plasma is that there's no PC D-sub port but instead has a HDMI/DVI port for computer connections (where you use a mini-DVI/DVI to HDMI adapter), so that's a plus. Another thing is that PN42B400 does not have a headphone jack, no anti-glare filterbright technology, has no silver decor at the bottom of the SAMSUNG logo, and the volume (+/-) and power buttons are touch sensitive and are in the front of the unit, similar to that of the PN42B450. Compared to the PN42B450 model, this model only has 2 HDMI ports.

Overall, this is a great buy at an affordable price.

Things to Know About the HDTV You're About to Buy

With new High Definition technology and Blu-ray about to replace DVD's, it's about time you get rid of that old tube TV you got back in 1990, and upgrade to an HDTV. When going from a big bulky tube TV to a nice slim flat screen HDTV, there are a couple things you need to know to make sure you pick out the best one. Picking out the wrong HDTV can not only be bad for you home, but your wallet too. Here are some "need to know tips" when buying your first HDTV.

LCD, Plasma or DLP?
That is right! There are 3 different types of HDTV on the market right now. Which one you choose is completely up to you, but picking the wrong one can make you want to run right back to that big box you used to call a TV. So lets go over the pros and cons of each type.

DLP (Digital Light Processing)
If you are looking for the biggest TV possibly then DLP is what you're looking for. DLP's are usually over 50 inches and run all the way up to 73 inches. They don't hurt your pockets either, a 61-inch LED backlit only runs about $1900. It is an unwritten rule that if your looking for a set over 50 inches you go with DLP. They have great blacks, so bad contrast is not a problem. If you pick up an LED-backlit model, they are better on color accuracy and have a longer life span then a light-bulb-based DLP.

Now don't get me wrong, these TVs are not perfect. The biggest thing to think about when buying a DLP is placement. With DLP the viewing angle must be spot on. If you are sitting directly in front of the TV, the picture can't be beat. If you are sitting in your favorite recliner off to the side or your kids are sitting on the floor you won't be able to see anything. So if you buy a DLP you need to think about where it is going to be placed.

Furthermore DLP TVs can be lighter then a plasmas or LCDs, they are bulkier and will not work with wall mounts. So mounting a DLP on your wall is out of the question.

Plasma
The major reason to think Plasma is that it beats any overpriced LCD in blacks, blur-free motion, and contrast. Plasma can also be found in any size you can find an LCD, usually between 32-50 inches. Plasma HDTV's have quickly become the most popular type of HDTV. Old issues of burn-in and short life span are no longer a problem. Newer plasmas have a life span of about 60,000 hours and have new technology to prevent burn in.

A bad thing about Plasma is that they use a crazy amount of energy. They use about twice the amount of power that an LCD would. They are also a tad bit heavier and a little more expensive then a LCD. When buying a Plasma TV you really have to think about how much your willing to spend for a TV and keep in mind your electric bill.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
If you are looking for a HDTV that is 42 inches or smaller, then LCD is your default choice. They are a lot lighter and thinner then any other HDTV made today. They are also much cheaper and use less power, but remember you get what you pay for. If you have a very brightly lit living room, then LCD is your best bet. They tend to be the brightest. An LED-backlit LCD can give you almost Plasma like picture but are way over priced.

LCD can't deliver on blacks or contrast like a Plasma HDTV can. When you are looking for an LCD be sure to check for response time. 6ms is as low as you would want to go and unfortunately that is what most LCD response times are. You want and try to look for a 4ms; it will be a little pricier but would help with motion blur.

720p vs. 1080p
Here's the thing when it comes to 720p or 1080p. Picking between the two all depends on how big the HDTV is, and how far away you plan on sitting. If you are going to buy an HDTV 40 inches or under, you most likely can't tell the difference. Anything bigger then 40 inches you have to be thinking of how far away you will be viewing your TV. If you picked up a 42" 1080p you should be sitting six feet away for the HDTV, seven feet for a 50" 1080p set. If you plan on having the HDTV further away then that I would think about picking up a 720p HDTV at a cheaper price.

Extras
Now that you have you an HDTV picked out; there are a couple more things to take into consideration. HDMI cables are a must! An HDMI cable brings that high definition signal to your TV and can greatly cut down the amount of wires you have tucked away behind your TV.

If you buy your HDTV at a Best Buy or Wal-Mart they are going to offer you a warranty. Don't bother! Plasmas and LCDs have a low risk of breaking. Most of the time, things that do go wrong can be fixed under the manufacture's warranty.

Stand or wall mount?
If you want to take the easy, but more expensive route then grab a nice stand. If you go for the wall mount you'll need to be careful. Weight plays a big part in this. With mounting to a wall, you have to bolt into wall studs. If these studs don't hold it could result in a television tragedy. If the studs do hold then the only concern is finding a place to hide all the wires hanging from the TV. I recommend the stand; it's safer and easier.

Often overlooked is transportation. If you pick up your new HDTV form a department store, remember that the box your TV comes in is much larger then the TV itself. So seek a friend or relative with a truck or van if necessary.

Finally as technologically advanced as these televisions are, no matter what model you choose, the display will only look as nice as what is fed into it. There is a reason that all of the stores you will shop in will have HDTV's running a satellite feed, the picture is just flat better quality than anything a filtered cable feed would provide. Also, if you have just invested in an HDTV, my guess is that you are going to want the most HD programming you can get, Dish Network is the industry leader with over 140-channels and aggressive promotions that will save you some money.

Chose the 720p over 1080 to save some money and because we don't do gaming or expect to hook up a computer to TV. Picture color and model style are excellent. I've been looking at the Aquos model for two to three years. No other brand or model was even considered. The LCD display is as beautiful and colorful as Sharp claims. Very happy with my purchase. Delivery was the only problem. It took way longer than estimated and I blame that on the shipping company, so don't be impatient, especially if you live in a rural area.

A Look at the Panasonic 1080p Plasma Viera Series

The Panasonic 1080p plasma series is one of the most popular lines of plasma TVs on the market today. They come with increased contrast ratios for deep blacks and appealing shadow detail. In addition these Panasonic 1080p plasma models offer a smooth picture and vivid colors that will appeal to movie lovers, sports fans and HDTV viewers alike.

If you are in the market for a new plasma then you have probably looked at several models and may very well be confused by all of the different makes and models. I will try to break down the basic differences between models in the Panasonic 1080p plasma Viera series.

Lets take a look at the model numbers. A typical Panasonic Viera plasma model is TH-xxPZ80U. There are several things to look at in order to understand the model number.

1. TH-xxPZ80U - The xx will represent the size of the TV (for example 50PZ80U will be a 50" model). Sizes range from as small as 42 inches and go up to 65 inches in the top of the line model.

2. TH-xxPZ80U - The PZ indicates that this is a 1080p model. Panasonic does also offer a 720p model, but that would be indicated by a PX.

3. TH-xxPZ80U - This is where it starts to get even a bit more confusing. These indicate the individual attributes and feature sets of each model with a good 80U, better 85U, even better 800U, and best (at least until they come up with an even better model) 850U.

So lets dig in a little deeper and check out the attributes and features of the different models.

80U - This is the base model. Of course these will be the least expensive of the models and include all the basics that give the Panasonic 1080p plasma TVs such a great reputation. They come with a 20,000:1 contrast ratio, 2 speakers and 3 HDMI inputs.

85U - The next step up in the model lines adds additional contrast ratio taking it up to 30,000:1 and add an input for PC connection.

800U - The next step up makes several additions such as 24p support and an additional HDMI input as well as THX certification. Other considerations are the addition of 2 more speakers for a higher quality sound, although if you connect your TV through an audio video receiver then you more then likely will not even use your TVs speakers. The 800U models also come with a swivel base which may be beneficial to those who do not choose to wall mount their plasma.

850U - The 850U represents the top of the line model by adding additional shades of color gradation as well as pro setting menus and a studio reference mode.

Hopefully that gives a bit of clarity to the Panasonic 1080p plasma Viera series. There is sure to be a size and feature set that suits a wide range of budgets. So if you are looking at a new TV for the holiday season or for the digital changeover, a Panasonic plasma may be the right choice for you.

LG 42LG30 42-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Customer Review

I bought the LG-42LG30 about one month before Christmas last year, as the price dropped below 0. I use a Radio Shack antenna on the roof (80 inch VHF/UHF model) and the antenna signal goes through a splitter so I get FM radio signal for the receiver, a converter box for an old VCR, and the TV. After checking out the "antennaweb" site, I aimed my antenna as per the location of the broadcast towers, and I get ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, and three public stations including the high-def ones. I also got some religious stuff that I promptly deleted from the channel list.

The TV gets great High-def broadcast signals so we watch all the prime time shows that we like, plus the classy public stuff like Masterpiece Theatre and Nova. I also bought a factory-refurbished Harman-Kardon 355 surround receiver that drives two Large Advent speakers at the front, and a pair of Smaller Advents as the surround channels. I have an Oppo upconverting DVD player that allows you to have hi-def compatible signals using ordinary DVDs, and the picture I get is every bit as sharp as the broadcast hi-def. I recently watched "Wall-E" and enjoyed it even more than I did at the theatre. The surround system balances up perfectly and is just amazing. No subwoofer needed.

But even with the receiver turned off, the LG TV speakers are clean, uncolored and smooth. They only lack the deepest bass but not a problem for 95% of the program content.

The Oppo DVD player is a great item, and it has excellent audio outputs including discreet channel outputs which work in the HK direct channel inputs. It plays every type of audio and DVD disc except Blu-ray. But I won't be getting blu-ray anytime soon, as the Oppo gives a great picture that looks high-def to my eyes, especially since I am over ten feet from the screen. One more thing-When I am watching hi-def broadcasts, the TV's digital audio out goes directly to the HK receiver via an optical cable, and the receiver automatically switches to "Dolby Digital" so you get pure surround audio with the picture. Can't beat it. I am a cheapskate but I don't like to compromise, so do yourself a favor, save some money and buy this TV!

Samsung HPT4264 42-Inch Plasma HDTV Customer Review

First of all, I would just like to commend the Eagle service. I am on the 3rd floor in my apartment building, and getting a TV of this size up to my Apt would be difficult enough, and this service made those issues irrelevant.

As for the TV:
I was so dead set on the LCD 40-42", and 1080P, but after I did some research, I realized that 1080P isn't going to be in wide use for quite some time. So I noticed this TV had a contrast ratio of 15,000 to 1. Most LCD TV's had 10,000 to 1 or so, so I viewed this as a huge plus

I did more research of this TV on AVS forum, to make sure that there were no issues, manufacturing defects etc, and to my knowledge, I was unable to find such issues.

I set up the TV on the wall using a Peerless mount, and when I finally turned the TV on and connected it to an HD source.. all I can say was WOW!! I am totally hooked. We ended up putting this in our bedroom, meanwhile we have a 30" Samsung Slimfit TV in the Living Room, so you must imagine there is now a lot of TV watching in Bed.

In summary:
For those who are hesistant to go with a Plasma - trust me on this - Do not hesitate, and go and get this TV you will not be disappointed!!

Sharp Aquos LC20D42U 20-Inch LCD HDTV Customer Review

This is the first (smaller) LCD set I've seen that has a good off-angle view when looking up (first of a new generation of smaller sets with upgraded LCD as found on bigger sets)!
I once got burned by a Toshiba 23HLV87 (off-angle view when looking up was terrible) which I exchanged for a Toshiba 26LV47 (off-angle view is great up/down as well as from the sides). After my experience with the Toshibas, I found that many smaller LCD sets (`bout anything smaller than 26") that look good from the sides (and some looked good from above) have a terrible off-angle view when looking up.
I've wanted to replace my kitchen TV (mounted high) with an LCD, and after a call to Sharp to verify this screen does indeed look good (when looking up), I ordered (the owner manual says the viewing angles are 170 degrees horizontally and VERTICALLY)! This is the first (smaller?) set I've seen with specs that specifically state off-angle viewing angles both horizontally AND vertically, so I assume this is the first generation of smaller sets with an updated LCD screen as found on most 26" and above sets.
I have previous good experience with a well-used Sharp Aquos, so hopefully the quality/performance of this set is just as good.
BTW...if you want to download an owner manual (not listed on Sharp USA site for this model), you can either e-mail Sharp USA customer service and they'll e-mail you one or you can visit Sharp Canada's site. Since Amazon doesn't seem to want to allow me to post an external link, just Google "LC20D42U manual" and the first hit should carry you to a page full of Sharp Canada manuals-they seem to have a much more extensive list of downloadable manuals than Sharp USA.

PROS
First set under 26" I've found that has good off-angle viewing when looking up!
Built-in HDTV tuner: (I have Comcast, and can get about 10 over the air channels through my cable by bypassing the DVR). I have no cable box/DVR in the kitchen, so I should be able to receive channels 1 though 70+ as well as approximately 10 over the air HD channels (based on current experience/HDTVs).
Picture quality: Comparable, if not better, than my Toshiba Regza and old Sharp Aquos.
CONS
No channel labeling!!! (my 26" Toshiba Regza does!) It's much nicer to label each channel rather than remembering what station 105.1 etc is!
Base doesn't swivel (it does tilt)
Sound is a bit on the weak side
Remote not lighted
Remote cannot control other devices!

After living with this TV for a few days, I'm lowering my rating from 4 stars to 3 due to missing features available on my other sets (don't see any way to change the star rating at Amazon)!
If not for size restrictions, I think I'd just get another Toshiba Regza (26LV47, or maybe the model without the built-in DVD player) instead of this Sharp.
The 1 big thing the Toshiba has going for it is channel labeling! It's tough to remember channel 105.1 is ????-would be nice to be able to label each channel with station call letters!

A good LCD television should have 12ms (milliseconds), 8ms, or 4ms response time. In response time technology, the lower the number means the better response time. Best of the Big Screens

Plasma TV, LCD TV, rear projection TV, I think I'm gonna scream! The trend toward ever-bigger TV screens is evident. One reason is the improvement in picture quality in a growing number of TVs with 1080p (1920x1080) native screen resolution. Native screen resolution indicates the number of pixels, or picture elements, on the screen. The more pixels, the finer the detail a screen can display. You can appreciate this level of detail most on a 50-inch screen, or larger, but you might see some subtle improvements on 40- to 47-inch screens also. 720p sets have been the front-runner because of price, but now you'll find a growing number of 1080p sets at lower prices, giving you much more of a choice.

So lets break down some of your choices. LCD TVs, come in common sizes of 17 to 52 inches and are very slim. The pros to a LCD TV are the wider range of sizes, and greater choice of 1080p sets than plasmas. They have brighter images and most have no reflections from the screen. They are lighter weight and they use less power. The cons are most have limited viewing angle. They do not match plasmas for deepest blacks and smooth motion.

Plasma TVs come in common sizes of 42 to 60 inches and are also slim. The pros, they have virtually unlimited viewing angle. Much deeper blacks and better contrast than on LCDs. There is no motion blur and more screen for the money. The cons, shiny screens show reflections in bright rooms. Images may leave a temporary or permanent impression. They use more power and there are fewer 1080p plasma sets to choose from than LCD 1080p sets.

Rear-projection TVs come in sizes of 50 to 70 inches. The pros, you get the most screen for your money with a wide selection of 1080p sets. The cons, they are much bigger and most go 12 to 20 inches deep. There is a narrower viewing angle than on plasmas. You must periodically replace the bulb, which can run you from $200 to $300. They have been more repair prone.

Is there a clear winner? The vast majority of consumers are buying both the LCD and plasma flat panels rather than rear-projection. Neither LCD nor plasma are the clear winner for quality, there are excellent sets of both types available. Size does matter. Carefully choose the size screen you are most interested in and fits the size of your room best and that may dictate the type set you buy. If you truly want a jumbo screen for a large room and home theater, then rear-projection is the way to go. Obviously for the smaller sizes you have to go with the LCD. They are generally brighter than plasma and have less reflections, so they look better in bright rooms. LCDs are also better for playing video games or for use as a monitor because they are not subject to burn-in from fixed images displayed for a long period as plasma TVs are.

For the overlapping sizes, you must look at the viewing angles of your room and of course your budget. A 1080p set is the way to go, especially if your considering HD programming. But don't completely rule out the 720p sets if you are going for the smaller size screens. In the smaller sizes some 720p sets are almost indistinguishable from the 1080p sets.

One last item of thought, skip the extended warranty. LCDs and plasmas have been very reliable for the first three years which is the period covered by the extended warranty, so there's little sense in spending several hundred dollars for a warranty.

I was browsing around amazon when i located this tv for a low price of 9 with free shipping, and immediately after i bought it, the price shot up to 00+. While I am not an expert on TV's.. the set seems to be a great bargain for the price I paid, but i wouldn't pay over 00 for it. Just felt slightly cheap; I couldn't even get the speaker bar attached and im not even sure it was the right one. On the plus side, it does have tons of ports, even if the picture quality isn't the best. I am satisfied with it, but like i said, only for what i paid. The suspicious thing is that there are very few specs for the TV listed anywhere on audiovox's website or amazons. The box says 1080p but I have no way of telling how well it even works with 1080p. No contrast ratios or anything are listed,which is a little conspicuous.

I have tried a regular DVD and one BRD so far and am very pleased. Load
times are very acceptable. No negatives from me on this unit so far. Will
report more later when I get some of the more seemingly problematic BRDs.

The BD-P1400 has classic Samsung style. The front of the unit is all glossy black, with a thin strip of silver along the bottom.

Got my Samsung BD-P1400 last night and boy was I excited!! Before this review, let me start by saying that this is the first and only Blu-ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player that I have owned and that I may not make some of the comparisons you are looking for. If I don't, just lemme know! I also want to say that I have NOT upgraded to the latest firmware yet as my modem is not near a TV.

Load Times Wonderful. I have 5 movies so far and they all loaded in approx. 15 seconds. Then there was the new F4 Silver Surfer.... This is a BD+ title from Fox and many have had complaints about its load time. The BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player gave me no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible. Let me say again that this is right out of the box, no firmware update yet!

I have not played with the sound much as I don't have my Onkyo TX-SR705 yet. I did notice that there is an option to set the speakers from small to large in analog 5.1 out mode. There are other discussions and reports of people getting full DTS-MA bitstream from this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player (after firmware upgrade) on other threads and forums. I'm getting very anxious to try this out!

Others

The rest of the stuff is pretty standard. 128x max forward, unit resumes same position in the movie even after powered off, pretty good response times from remote keys, etc.

All in all, this is a dynamite BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player. With the firmware upgrade, this guy will do just about anything that you can expect from a blu-ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player right now!!

In addition to Blu-ray discs, the Samsung BD-P1400 can play standard-definition DVDs and CDs.

The BD-PBD-P1400's high-resolution soundtrack support is excellent. It has onboard decoding for Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD High Resolution, which means it can output these soundtracks either in PCM format over the HDMI output or via the analog outputs. For newer receivers, the BD-P1400 also offers bitstream output for high-resolution soundtracks. So if you have a newer receiver with onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, you can set the BD-P1400 to output audio over HDMI in encoded bitstream format--letting your receiver do the decoding, rather than the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player.

There should be absolutely no sound quality difference whether you let the receiver decode or the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player decode, but some AV fans just love seeing the "Dolby TrueHD" light on their new receiver. If you need a Code free Converting DVD Disc Player for $79.95 Planet Omni also has that and they come with 2 warranties. So far, I am really happy with this purchase. I was not sure I made the right deal because of the negative reviews I read but bought it anyway.

I really don't know why people get upset when it only takes two minutes to get ready to play. I have used it several times with Blu-Ray disks rented from Netflix with no problems. I am still waiting for the eight free movies.

Connectivity is also solid. There's an HDMI output capable of carrying both 1080p video signals and high-resolution audio.

For high-def analog video, there's a component video output (limited to 1080i), and there's an S-Video output and a composite output for standard-def output. (As with all DVD BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player s, there is no DVD upscaling available via component video). On the audio side, there's the aforementioned HDMI output, along with 5.1-channel analog outputs, both optical and coaxial digital audio outputs, and stereo analog outputs.

Rounding out the connectivity is an Ethernet port, which enables you to upgrade the firmware from the Internet--a feature that's been common to HD DVD Players, but very rare among Blu-ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Players.

The BD-P1400 did a good job of rendering the opening sequence of Star Trek: Insurrection, demonstrating its 2:3 pull-down prowess. Next up was Seabiscuit, and the BD-P1400 did a solid job with the difficult introduction, with few to no jaggies on the black and white photos.

The Samsung is a REALLY good unit for the price. The multi-region version is just $849.95 from Planet Omni and considering they use a double motherboard specially imported which must cost a fortune plus the intensive labor it's a real great bargain, IMHO.

I was able to plug my unit directly into my modem with a network cable (as per Samsungs directions in the user manual) and the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player found it's new firmware and loaded it up without the need for me to get on the computer, burn disks...etc. Very cool.

The Samsung has a great image and with the current update I can listen to DTS-HD Master Audio (Sony can't say that for twice the price!).

With the pace at which the technology is moving I think it is very difficult for a manufacturer to manufacture these units, get them to market and have them totally "current" with the new disk technology, (which is changing daily), but Samsung has provided me with a unit that I can just plug into my modem and get an update when they have it available. I think that is AMAZING.

A little patience and understanding can go a long way. After all...it wasn't that long ago that when you bought an electronic component, you couldn't update it at all. I am sure Samsung will come thru with an update soon. I have not run into any disks I could not play as of yet.

Having never seen a 1200 in action, I can't help you - but the BD-P1400 PQ is excellent, but that's what Blu is all about - right?

I have tried several BD's from Netflix as well as a few standard def DVD's. All were great. As far as the handshake issue, I'm not really sure what that is.... and for the off, then play thing... why would you want to do that in a movie anyways?

Great BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player, I couldn't be more happy I got the new BD-P1400 last week. returned the 1200 to get it. (plus 100 price difference in my favor. PROS= the pic quality is by far the best I've seen, even better then the panny I had.

Controls are easy and setup just the same. I don't like it loses the signal at the beginning of the discs.
AUDIO= I am not able to use all the audio features due to my ONKYO being a few years old. I have it setup with a digital optical cable, the sound is really excellent except for the POPS I get every now and then.

As for the BD discs, POTC about 2 minutes, have had no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible, with any other BD movies. I did notice that after I hit pause and went to hit play, the movie would play for a minute and then stop. I had to hit play again. No big deal.

Used the Ethernet port to download new firmware, can't tell the difference though. I am sorry I am not that technical but this is my blue collar review. any??????s I will answer the best I can

I have a Playstation 3 that has awesome picture quality for both Blu-Ray and upscaling of Standard DVD's since a software upgrade. We use this for our main HD TV in the family room. I needed another BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player for a second HD TV we just had hung in our bedroom.

I waited for the BD-P1400 to become available since I already committed to the Blu-Ray format and wanted the latest technology available. I cannot say enough about the sound quality that this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player offers, it is unbelievable. The picture quality is excellent and on par with the Playstation 3. I am seriously considering purchasing a second BD-P1400 for our main set because of the outstanding sound. Great BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player especially for the money.

By far the best Blu-ray I ever tested. Never watch cartoons but now I'm spending a lot of time watching with my kids.

This is a great Blue Ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player. DTS HD MA bitstream finally. I have owned this product for about two months and am thrilled with it; it is really a good deal. I only use my Blu Ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player to play Blu Ray movies, since the sound is piped into a Samsung 5-disc receiver. The picture quality is amazing. I own four Blu Ray discs (which I purchased on Amazon at $14.99 each) and they all play beautifully, with no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible, and a crystal clear picture.

I bought this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player in December. I hooked it up with an HDMI cable to a Sony Receiver. The Cable Box from Comcast is also hooked up to the receiver. The receiver is connected to a 42 inch Panasonic 1080P Plasma. Three HDMI cables, that is it.

It has worked flawlessly from the beginning with every Blu-Ray disc we have tried. We get about one a week from Netflix. I can play Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Not sure why the other reviewer could not.

The picture quality is stunning with Planet Earth. I guess I can credit the Panasonic TV mostly for that.

I did the version 1.2 firmware upgrade in December. I just did the version 1.5 firmware upgrade yesterday Feb 5th. I downloaded both and created the ISO CD.

To me it works fast. So you have to wait a few seconds for it to boot up, so what? Go get the DVD while you are waiting.

Most computers nowadays take minutes to boot. I imagine it will never get better, likely probably worse over time since these are in essence computers, and the more technology advances the slower these machines are to turn on and load up.

After doing the firmware upgrade, I checked my settings and noticed they had been reset. If you have a digital receiver, you should make sure that the audio is set to 'bit rate' and not PCM if you want surround sound.

I also had no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible, playing regular DVDs or CDs either. So when it becomes obsolete, it will replace my other DVD BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player and improve the quality of the regular DVDs with my other older 720P Samsung set.

I don't think anyone should delay buying because of the format war. The minute you buy anything nowadays, it becomes obsolete and is eventually a throw away. So you at least enjoy it while you can, life is too short. At the prices today what the heck, it is cheap, buy now before the dollar becomes worthless! You can get an entire home theatre 1080P HDMI based system with speakers for less than $[...] right now. Thank you China! I got my HDMI cables from Planet Omni, $19.95 for 2 meter length, superb images and sound!

Before I hooked this up, I updated the firmware via the Ethernet port. Once that was done I have had no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible, with the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player at all. I debated whether or not to buy this due to some negative reviews, but the deal was just too good to pass up for a stand alone. Those of you that have had problems with this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player have every right to complain about them here, that's what these reviews are for.

However, the people complaining it isn't 1.1 or 2.0 (no BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player is 2.0 yet) should stop. Nowhere in the description does it say this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player is supposed to be 1.1. If you want to inform people there are updates coming and this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player will not be able to benefit, go ahead, but to say it is horrible and obsolete because of it being 1.0 is misleading. I have a feeling most people want to just watch the movie and would rarely use the features of 1.1 (like picture in picture commentary).

If that's you, this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player is perfect. If you need a 1.1 BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player, get the panasonic. For me this one will work fine for the next couple of years while Blu-ray gets its act together and finalizes an emerging product. I hope those of you that have had problems were able to get them resolved and can now enjoy the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player as I do.

I have had no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible with the Samsung BD-PBD-P1400. I just plugged it in, connected it to the internet and started the firmware upgrade utility. After about 20 minutes, the firmware upgrade was successful and I played my first movie without a glitch. Every movie I've played since has also played flawlessly. You can also upgrade the firmware by burning a CD or if you don't have internet, Samsung will send it to you.

This product works just fine on blu-ray disks, also on non-European format DVDs, and on music CD-ROMs. I have found no problem, and the multi-region version from Planet Omni will be even more incredible with it. It even does a superior job of showing plain DVDs on my 40" TV, where my previous DVD BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player only would take up part of the screen.

One clever and undocumented touch is that it seeks out the right TV input choice once a disk is inserted. It may help that the TV is also a Samsung.
I got this on Nov.30, 2007, and unlike what other reviewers have said, the BD-P1400 does start back where you stopped. Everything else looks and works great.

I'm editing this review on March 13, 2008, to reflect my experience with the machine. It appears to me that whether a DVD will start back where it stopped depends on how the DVD was manufactured, NOT on the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player . Some DVDs, such as "LOST, Season 3", don't even have chapter/scene makers on them, much less the ability to restart after a stop.

Some DVDs, such as "3:10 to Yuma", actually have their own system for marking where you stop or where you may want to go back to, but otherwise require a restart from scratch. But some DVDs do restart where stopped.

My chief complaint with Blu-Ray (not necessarily with this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player in particular) is that it takes FOREVER for a DVD to start up, then if you do have a DVD that won't restart from where it stopped, you have to go through the painfully long start-up again.

I've learned to NEVER PAUSE a DVD, which causes it to shut down the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player after a few minutes. Instead, I keep it going at 1/8 speed, then when I come back, I can easily back up to where I was -- a lot faster than a restart.

If there is a better BR BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player anywhere near this price range, I haven't heard of it. Now that HD DVD has died, I hope that DVD makers will focus their attention on making BR DVDs work more easily and FASTER.

This is a great player. The only issue is the firmware upgrade. I used CD-R/RW burning method...easiest and fastest. Burn *.iso image using nero burning rom software. The instructions are in [...]/support. I have both HD-DVD and blu-ray. so far blu-ray is better. HD looks like upconverted DVD. Read the instructions carefully i.e. the new Blu-ray "Live Free Die Hard" contains a note letting you know the software upgrade may be needed.

Lastly, remember this is HDMI 1.3 compatible...so in order to use 1.3 capabilities, you need a cable and TV which is HDMI 1.3 compatible also....the picture is great. Buy this BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player and upgrade the software right away.

I have read and continue to see many complaints about different blu-ray and hd-dvd BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player s not working like people hoped. I can say that with this model I have had absolutely zero issues.

I am sure some people will write that it doesn't load this or doesn't do that, but it hasn't affected me. I have not found a single disc that has not played perfectly. What people have to remember is that in this day and age everything is like a computer, you may have to update, it is part of life now, get over it.

Will the manufacturers eventually get this flawless, probably so but in the mean time I will be enjoying my movies now. If you are an early adopter like I am on technology then any issues you might run into will be no big deal. The BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player is easy to setup, easy to play and loads reasonably fast. Glad I bought it and already thinking about a second one for different room.

Before deciding to purchase my Samsung BD-P1400 I studied many of these customer reviews and they were very useful. I also read a dedicated AV Science forum online concerning this model BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player. First, all of the information and customer reviews highlight the endemic problem that implementation of newer Blu-Ray standards is occurring gradually. Moreover, features are evolving, meaning that we are all taking some chances when we purchase any Blu-Ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player (that is not a PS3).

I personally have no interest whatsoever in owning a game console. Second, many of these reviews describe in conscientious detail the kinds of problems that people are having, as well as whether and how the problems have been overcome. This review adds data to that second category - practical problems.

When my BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player arrived the very first thing I did was install the latest firmware downloaded from the Samsung web site. I suggest the method that uses a cd rather than a direct network connection; in either case the manuals and web site offer complete directions. Be sure to *confirm that the update was successful* by restarting the BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player , re-inserting the firmware cd, and comparing the disk version to the installed version.

What problems have I had? In a month of watching Netflix discs I have had not one single hiccup, not a single blue screen, no refusals to play any of the BDs or SD-DVDs that others have had problems with - I have had *nothing but perfect performance*! Pros: My favorite feature, by far, is the 24 frame per second output mode. Movies display exactly as they were intended - be that good or bad - and 'judder' in slowly-panned scenes is significantly improved compared to 30 FPS. This alone, in my opinion, warrants the relatively modest price tag. [In direct comparisons using my 50" plasma TV, the video quality of movies from the BD-P1400 at 24 FPS is clearly superior to the same discs when played through advanced computer video cards that cost the same!] I also like the features and layout of the remote control, which doubles up to control my Samsung TV. Yes, these are basic features within the realm of Blu-Ray, but they have been very capably implemented.

Cons: My only nit-pick is that I would like a set-up feature that allowed the audio and video outputs to be delayed relative to each other by a selectable increment. This would allow perfect lip-sync when using older (i.e. slower) audio decoders/receivers that are not HDMI 1.3 compliant. However, to my knowledge this feature is not offered on *any* new Blu-ray BD-P1400 Blu-Ray Disc Player , since the HDMI 1.3 standard incorporates an automatic synchronization feature if all the components are HDMI 1.3 compatible.

Maybe I've been lucky, but I have not had a single 'playability' issue using the latest build of the latest firmware. Based on this - 5 stars.

Let's hope that Samsung will support this model well into the future by further optimizing the operating firmware, as needed.
In brief: Outstanding picture quality---my wife and I say, even for stills, "Polaroid picture!", breathtaking.

The unit has all the requisite connections. I play it through a Yamaha av-tuner with 7.1 channels, via HDMI, but other connections are available.

There is a simple blue-ringed on-off button, and a tray open-close button; that's it on on-board controls. The remote has several levels of sophistication: It is easy to find and use the power, pause-play-rewind-fast/slow controls, those you will use 99% of the time. The remote also provides movie menu controls (e.g., language), player menu controls, and options for controlling other devices---learn to use them only if/when you need them. There was absolutely no setting up to do---plug and play! Great neuro-ergonomics, i.e., intuitive ease of use.

In over three weeks of regular usage, we have noted some glitches, but it's not clear if it is the player itself or the emerging technology. Several times, the unit went into "Stop" mode as if the button had been pushed; I had to hit "Play" to get the movie started again. Mildly distracting.

What would I also like? Perhaps controls for the av amplifier as well, although that unit has all the buttons needed for TV, player, and amp. Maybe better backlighting on all buttons. This is one heck of a deal, recommended to anyone wanting to get into blu-ray.

the Samsung 1400 is significantly superior to the Toshiba HD-A3. The BD-P1400 supports not only TrueHD, but DTS-HD MA bitstream output over HDMI. The A3 can only extract the DTS 'core' and cannot send bitstream DTS-HD MA out. Only the HD-A35 and the XA2 can do that, but both are significantly costlier than this player. The BD-P1400 can also output full 1080p/24 video, while the A3 can only send out 1080i and does not support 24fps output.

Both are slow to load up, but the A3 is significantly slower, taking almost 2 full minutes to warm up the player and display video on your monitor/screen. The PS3 takes less than 30 seconds btw. The A3 is also very noisy, distractingly so especially because it is a high pitched noise that is hard to ignore.

Overall, the BD-P1400 is a high functioning blu-ray stand alone player, that supports lossless audio output (PCM, TrueHD, and DTS-HD MA) and 1080p/24. I would still recommend a four hundred dollar PS3 over the BD-P1400, but if you really want a standalone player, you can't go wrong with the BD-P1400.

This is a excellent blu ray and I am very happy with my purchase, I recommend this player to everyone and the price is great.

It did NOT disappoint in the slightest. I have not had any problems playing any DVD Blu-ray or not. I have not had to download any firm-ware to solve ANY issues. The BD-P1400 worked straight out of the box. The only thing that comes close to a con is that it's slow on start-up and loading.

I am very satisfied with this player and I'm happy. All I can report is that mine works perfectly so far, and I have recommended it to many of my friends when asked for an opinion.

This Blu-Ray player is first-class. Easy setup. This is my first Hi-Def player, and I am very happy with my purchase. I did the latest firmware update per the instructions in the manual, and it has functioned flawlessly. The player has a modern, slick, glossy appearance. The sounds are incredible, and the images are too beautiful to be described. Very easy to install and use. I never knew the difference that a Blu-ray player can make in the movie watching experience. I am not an expert, just a regular mom that purchased the blu-ray player for family viewing.

I have had this player for about a month now...After updating the firmware, it has been flawless. Amazing picture, quiet unit, looks great in the entertainment rack along with my HD DVD player.

The upconversion is wonderful! Best part is I can use optical and take advantage of the new audio codecs.

Not a single problem. I even have it in a tight spot with 2" clearance above top and open back with No overheating problems. None of my movies have locked up or have been unable to play. I have tried Live Free or Die Hard, all the Harry Potters, Planet Earth and others. Firmware 1.5 arrived on Jan 24th and it has seemed to fix all the problems others were having. I would definitely recommend this player to others.

I have a PS3 and a Sony 300 S Blu-ray player, and they are both excellent blu-ray players. However, I love my new Samsung 1400 BD it can decode DTS HD sound, and it makes for a wonderful movie watching experience. The first thing a new owner should do is go to samusung.com and download the latest firmware update (it is a fast simple process). There are also instructions on the owner's manual that explains how to update the player. I have watched the latest Blu-ray releases from Fox, Disney, Sony, etc. and the picture/sound quality is outstanding. Very pleased with the product.
